Researcher Visa Sweden: The Permit Route for Academics and Scientists

Sweden has a dedicated permit route for researchers from outside the EU/EEA. This guide explains eligibility, the hosting agreement requirement, salary rules, and how it differs from a standard work permit.

What is the researcher permit?

Sweden offers a dedicated residence and work permit for researchers (forskare) from outside the EU/EEA who are employed at or hosted by a recognised research organisation. It is implemented under EU Directive 2016/801 and provides several advantages over a standard work permit, including faster processing and a more straightforward employer obligation.

Who qualifies?

The researcher permit applies to:

  • Academics conducting research at a Swedish university, research institute, or company-based research department
  • Postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in employment (not doctoral students on stipends — they follow a different track)
  • Scientists employed by a private company to conduct research and development activities

The key requirement is that the host organisation must be approved by Migrationsverket as a research host. Most major Swedish universities (KTH, Chalmers, Stockholm University, Lund University) are pre-approved. Private companies conducting R&D can apply for approved host status separately.

The hosting agreement

Unlike a standard work permit — where the employer submits a job offer — the researcher permit uses a mottagningsavtal (hosting agreement) between the researcher and the host organisation. This document must be signed by both parties and submitted to Migrationsverket. It specifies:

  • The nature of the research project
  • The duration of the stay
  • Financial conditions (salary or stipend, as applicable)
  • The host organisation's responsibility to cover return travel costs if the researcher becomes destitute

Salary and collective agreement rules

For employed researchers, the same collective agreement rules apply as for any other work permit — the salary must meet the applicable agreement for the role. For university researchers, this is typically the agreement between SULF (the Swedish Association of University Teachers) and SUHF (the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions). For researchers on stipends rather than salaries, the collective agreement requirement does not apply, but the stipend must be sufficient to cover the researcher's living costs in Sweden.

Advantages over a standard work permit

  • No EU/EEA advertisement required. Researcher permits do not require proof that the position was advertised to EU/EEA candidates.
  • Faster processing. Researcher applications are typically processed faster than standard work permits.
  • EU mobility. After 12 months in Sweden on a researcher permit, the holder can move to conduct research in another EU member state without starting the permit process from scratch.
  • Family members. Family members accompanying a researcher can obtain permits more easily — the maintenance requirement is applied proportionally to the researcher's income.

Duration and renewal

Researcher permits are granted for the duration of the hosting agreement, up to 2 years. They can be renewed if the research continues. After 4 years of legal residence, the researcher is eligible to apply for permanent residence on the standard track.

HR at research institutions: key actions

  • Confirm the institution is an approved host before starting the permit process
  • Prepare and sign the hosting agreement before the researcher applies
  • Verify the researcher's salary meets the applicable SULF/SUHF collective agreement
  • Track permit expiry — researcher permits often run to exactly the project end date, leaving no buffer for the extension application
