Sweden: new work permit rules from 1 June 2026
From 1 June 2026 a work permit needs a salary of at least 90% of the median salary in force on the application day, or 75% for some occupations and groups. Someone staying a year or less must also have, or have applied for, comprehensive health insurance valid in Sweden. Extensions of permits granted under the older rules, registered up to 1 December 2026, keep the older requirement.

What to do
- Check every new offer against the 90% level (or 75% for an exempt occupation) before the contract is signed.
- For stays of a year or less, make sure the employee has, or has applied for, comprehensive health insurance.
- List the extensions of older-rule permits and register them before 1 December 2026 where the older requirement helps.
The figures
| Before | From the change | |
|---|---|---|
| Work-permit minimum salary | No earlier level | 33,390 SEK/month |
| Work-permit minimum salary for exempt occupations and groups (75% of the median) | No earlier level | 27,825 SEK/month |
